Award-winning actress Emma Thompson’s daughter Gaia has left school.

The fifteen-year-old has opted instead to be home-schooled.

Speaking about the move, her father, actor Greg Wise, says, ‘She loves learning and she’s terribly focused and hardworking, but she didn’t like the sausage factory of formal education…We’ve got tutors and I’ve built her a school room in the garden’.

Gaia has joined the increasing numbers of children whose parents have become disillusioned with the quality of education being provided in British schools today – even by our leading independent schools.

Experienced home-schooling tutor, Monica Janssens, is hardly surprised at the findings. One of her clients, Mrs Farmer, whose daughter, Coco (nearly 14) Monica has been home tutored for nearly two years, explains why:

‘Coco has learnt more with Monica than she ever did at school.  Her older brother Henry, who attended the same public school until 18, concurs.  He looks at Coco’s essays and the work she’s doing with Monica and he says, “Mum, I wish I’d had this quality of tuition because we honestly weren’t taught these important techniques and essential tools”’.
